Nathan, Caleb, Matthew and Jared,
Think of the addiction of people screaming your names, knowing all the words to songs that haven’t even been released yet. 80,000 people singing your lyrics, the girls, the hits the parties that never end - all great times.
People will tell you that fame is fleeting. This may be true but during your rise you have grown as a band, as friends and as a family. Your hard work has paid off but who are you working for now?
Initially you did it for yourselves, you were brash and charismatic a complete breath of fresh air. Then you did it for us fans the people who were there from the start. The London crowd that loved you when people in your own town didn’t even know your names… Then you blew up. Two songs that they say put you on the map - that made you!? Well you ask any of your real fans and they will say you were made in 2004.
You’re having a hard time right now and the people who will pipe up the most are RCA and the Sex On Fire fans. Well you know what fuck them…
Go up to your boss at RCA and ask him to tell you the first line to Molly’s Hangover. “Sorry fella’s I’m too busy counting MY money after YOUR three year tour”
No one knows the true story but we do know that us fans aren’t going anywhere. We still sit around listening to True Love Way, go nuts when we see Jared dance during Trani at Bonnaroo. Take your time, fall back in love with what you do. We’ll be waiting.
We’ll still be at the barrier, we’ll still know all the words - loving a band is like a marriage. In sickness and in health.

“Play something we know!”
Those words bellowed from a drunk ‘fan’ summed up Kings Of Leon’s triumphant return to Hyde Park last night.
I have not disguised my distain for the last album Come Around Sundown, yet last night in a rain soaked London as the sun came down those four kings payed homage to us fans who have been with Kings Of Leon since their journey began.
In their homecoming gig in Bonnaroo last year, following the success of the album ‘Only By The Night’, Kings Of Leon played four tracks from their then untitled album Come Around Sundown: Radioactive, Mary, The Immortals and Southbound which left me excited for new KoL but as I have documented quite publically, the album fell flat on me. More to do with the mixdown than the tracks itself - There is still a search party out for Matt’s guitar in the album version of Radioactive but I digress. Let’s just say I felt ‘let down’ by the bands latest offering and somewhat offended with the ubiquitos to the point of annoying playing of Sex On Fire and Use Somebody - and the ‘fans’ these songs brought, which leads me back to my opening sentence…
Jared had teased us on Twitter earlier in the week stating “Trying to sneak in a couple of my faves for Hyde Park. Ragoo? True Love Way?” This had me hoping for the boys to dig deep in to tracks that many had not heard live before, great songs from Youth And Young Manhood that your average Sex On Fire fan had no clue about.
As we arrived at Hyde Park despite the mud and following a day of terrential rain spirits were high. It was the besties 33rd Birthday and the sun had now come out. Drinks in hand we were greeted by the trailer for the upcomming documentary Talihina Sky - which has it’s premier at The Edinburgh Film Festival on 25th June.
In a burst of red smoke the kings took to the stage - I thought “Caleb, please don’t let me down” FOUR KICKS! Not unexpected as they have been starting with this recently but an awesome start to any set - they seemed to be having some sound issues but this was sorted out quite quickly. (Maybe it was the same guy that mixed out Matt’s guitar from Radioactive?) Next up was Taper Jean Girl - this is a personal fave and mine and Lorraine’s song (best pal). THEN… Pistol Of Fire!!! WOW! Never heard this live! Absolutely rocked London but as I took a moment from my frantic jumping and singing I looked around and NO ONE was moving, no singing, no jumping - nothing… I was surrounded by ‘new fans’. This really annoys me.
Sex On Fire and Use Somebody are great songs, nobody can deny that they are brilliant, stadium anthems which everyone will jump and sing their hearts out to but when I find a band I like, the first thing I do is listen to everything they have done. Why would you not want to listen to Trani or Red Morning Light? But for some reason as was the case last year people had to come to listen to four of five songs. I remember laughing as they played ‘Notion’ and it got so much more reaction than the amazing ‘California Waiting’…
The highlight for me was the incredible renditions of Arizona and McFearless which the band dedicated to their friend Ryan Dunn who tragically died this week. I even really enjoyed the newer songs - Pyro and No Money! I got home at midnight and bought Come Around Sundown. So the message to those ‘new fans’ go out and get the old stuff and hopefully next time we meet we can all have a big party!
Thank you Kings Of Leon. An amazing night was had and I can’t wait to see you again. I love you for playing some older tracks. You were brilliant again. But to be fair to you, as a live band you never stopped being brilliant…
